Biography

Until he reached junior high school, Tim’s life goal was to become a superhero. He didn't just read comic books, Tim studied them and filled a makeshift journal with neatly printed notes. He wanted to know what qualities made a hero. When youth radio reporter Billy Batson hollered out "Shazam!" and morphed into adult Captain Marvel, Tim discovered he was summoning the wisdom of 'S'olomon, the strength of 'H'ercules, the stamina of 'A'tlas, the power of 'Z'eus, the courage of 'A'chilles and the speed of 'M'ercury. And so Tim trained in earnest to develop those attributes as well.

A seventh grade fascination with clouds led Tim to consider a career as a meteorologist. He painstakingly learned all the different varieties from altocirrus to cumulonimbus, and under which conditions each formed. Midway through the school year, though, fickle youth and a failed science fair project chilled his desire to be a weatherman and Tim’s aspirations once again turned superheroic.

As a youngster Tim’s real-life heroes were boxers. He idolized great champions of the era- Marvin Hagler, Yaqui Lopez and “Miracle” Matthew Saad Muhammad- and kept photos of them on his bedroom wall. So great was Tim’s admiration that he slept facedown in hopes of flattening his nose like theirs.

Tim’s mother Mary worked as a nurse at the Motion Picture Hospital and gave long term care to aging show business people. Maxie Rosenbloom, a former light-heavyweight champion who later performed in vaudeville, was one of the hospital’s residents. Rosenbloom was normally a gentle man, but his brain had gotten rattled during his years as a boxer. Some nights Maxie imagined he was back in the ring and ferociously battled the other patients and orderlies. Shaken by one of Rosenbloom’s particularly spirited impromptu brawls, Mary implored her son, "You can be anything you want, just don't be a fighter.” She didn’t realize the die had already been set.
